What is E10 Fuel and will it affect my GreenMech Chipper?

These are common questions being asked by almost everyone in the industry at the moment so we at GreenMech have created this informative guide to put minds at ease.

 About E10 petrol

E10 petrol contains up to 10% renewable ethanol, which will help to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with petrol vehicles and tackle climate change. E5 petrol in the UK currently contains up to 5% renewable ethanol.

E10 petrol is already widely used across Europe, the US and Australia. It has also been the reference fuel against which new cars are tested for emissions and performance since 2016.

Can I use E10 Fuel in my GreenMech Chipper?

The answer is YES YOU CAN. All of GreenMech’s current product offering is E10 fuel compliant and all current engine manufacturers have issued PDF statements and guidelines to keep engines running at optimum performance. These can be downloaded below:

Guidelines for using E10 fuel with GreenMech Chippers

Always use clean, fresh, unleaded petrol with an octane rating of at least 77.

Issues will come with people storing fuel for more than 4 weeks after purchase or more specifically leaving fuel in engines when they are not in use for extended periods of time. The concern should be around engines that are used seasonally or on an occasional basis, as the fuel will deteriorate and become quite acidic. We recommend using fuel within 4 weeks of fuel purchase. Fuel stabilisers such as Fuel Fit from Briggs & Stratton can be used to help prolong storage life.

Fuel economy

Using E10 petrol can slightly reduce fuel economy, You may see a reduction of around 1%, but it is unlikely to be noticeable in the everyday working of your machine.

Mixing E10 and E5 petrol

There’s no reason you can’t mix the 2 grades of petrol (E5 and E10). It’s perfectly safe to mix them in the same tank or fill up with E5 if E10 is not available.

Availability

E10 is becoming the standard petrol grade in Great Britain, meaning E10 petrol will be available at almost all petrol stations across England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland should expect the introduction to happen in early 2022, subject to legislative approval.
